At our school, we understand the importance of ensuring children gain a rich knowledge of computer literacy to prepare them for 21st Century Britain. Through the study of computing, children are able to develop a wide range of skills, knowledge and understanding that they require for the rest of their lives.

Intent

Curriculum design, coverage and appropriateness

At our school, our intent is to equip children for our ever-developing technological world and to ensure our children behave responsibly online.  Technology is continually advancing and driving society into the future and we want our children to be confident in participating effectively in this digital world. Alongside this, we ensure children have the understanding they need to know how to stay safe online and determine authenticity of source material.  Computing is woven throughout our curriculum and is an integral part of all learning.

Our intent is for children to:

  • achieve their absolute potential by having the highest expectations of their learning.
  • be confident in the use of a range of technology and to understand its place in today’s world
  • be confident to ask questions and extend their knowledge.
  • use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; recognise acceptable/unacceptable behaviour and identify a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact.

Implementation

Curriculum delivery

Teaching (pedagogy)

Assessment (formative and summative)

We implement our Computing curriculum through a bespoke computing curriculum based around a two-year rolling programme. Children get the opportunity to have discrete computing lessons which is then reinforced and enhanced across the curriculum. We have 1:1 ipads for all children across EYFS, KS1 and KS2 and use interactive whiteboards to enhance learning.

The national curriculum for computing aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation.
  • can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems.
  • can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
  • are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.

At our school, we use the Apple ‘Everyone can…’ resources to deliver the majority of our computing curriculum. These are high quality teaching and learning materials which enable progression for all pupil through the use of a wide range of apps:

  • Everyone can code Learn to Code 1 and 2
  • Everyone can create- music
  • Everyone can create- drawing
  • Everyone can create- photo
  • Everyone can create- video

The online safety aspects of our computing curriculum are delivered using Google's Be Internet Legends materials, CEOP and NSPCC (EYFS/KS1).

Impact

Attainment and progress (including national tests and assessments)

The impact of this is our children understand the importance of staying safe online and what to do if they have any concerns. As they embark on their next journey, they are confident and equipped with the knowledge and understanding, to participate effectively in the digital world.
